  3.     Very definitely a region of France, this is a large island (50 miles by 22 miles) with more than 350,000 inhabitants. Mountainous and still volcanic, Martinique claims the "Pompeii of the Caribbean" among its repertoire of tourist attractions: the devastated remains of the once-elegant Gallic city of St. Pierre, destroyed in the 1902 eruption of Mt. Pelee, are still busy today with curious tourists.
